Autumn is one of the four temperate seasons. Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter usually in September Northern Hemisphere.

The equinoxes might be expected to be in the middle of their respective seasons, but temperature lag (caused by the thermal latency of the ground and sea) means that seasons appear later than dates calculated from a purely astronomical perspective. The actual lag varies with region. Some cultures regard the autumnal equinox as "mid-autumn", others with a longer lag treat it as the start of autumn. Meteorologists (and most of the temperate countries in the southern hemisphere) use a definition based on months, with autumn being September, October and November in the northern hemisphere.

In North America, autumn is usually considered to start with the September equinox. However, according to the Irish Calendar which is based on ancient Celtic traditions, autumn lasts throughout the months of August, September, and October, or possibly a few days later, depending on tradition. According to United States unofficial tradition, autumn runs from the day after Labor Day (i.e. the Tuesday following the first Monday of September) through Thanksgiving (i.e. the fourth Thursday in November), after which the holiday season that demarcates the unofficial beginning of winter begins.

Memorial day weekend aka (Summer kick-off weekend) marks our entry into BBQ, beach, and fun-in-the-sun season :)
Given that I ♥ food, fun, and sun... I want to share an assortment of BBQ receipes that are perfect for this weekend and the rest of the summer. Enjoy!

Tomato Basil Grilled Bruschetta

Ingredients

4 ripe medium tomatoes, diced

4 leaves basil, chopped

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

1 clove garlic, thinly sliced

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Instructions

In a medium bowl, mix tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Spoon onto bruschettas and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil

Ingredients

4 cups water

3/4 pound wax beans, trimmed

3/4 pound green beans, trimmed

2 cups chopped tomato

1 tablespoon sherry vinegar

2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 cup thinly sliced fresh basil

1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled feta cheese

Instructions

Bring 4 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Cook the beans in boiling water for 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Drain and rinse with cold water; drain.

Combine tomato and next 4 ingredients (through pepper) in a bowl. Divide beans evenly among 8 plates. Top each serving with 1/4 cup tomato mixture. Sprinkle each serving with 1 tablespoon sliced basil and 1 tablespoon cheese

Grilled Swordfish Kabobs
Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds swordfish steaks, about 1 inch thick, cut into 1-inch cubes

About 30 bay leaves

4 1/2 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 cup dry bread crumbs

2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper

Instructions

Light the grill. Thread the fish cubes between bay leaves onto four large skewers. Put the kabobs on a plate and brush with oil.

On a large plate, mix the bread crumbs, parsley, salt, and pepper. Pat the crumb mixture onto the exposed sides of the fish. Drizzle with the oil.

Grill the kabobs over low to moderately low heat or broil them, brushing with the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons oil, until the bread crumbs are golden and the fish is just done, 8 to 10 minutes.

Grilled Peaches with Ice Cream
Ingredients
2 tablespoons light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

4 fresh peaches

grapeseed oil (or vegetable oil)

vanilla ice cream
Instructions

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon.

Cut peaches along the seam all the way around and twist halves off the pit. Brush cut sides with grapeseed oil or vegetable oil. Cook, cut side down, on a hot grill until fruit has grill marks, 3 to 4 minutes.

Brush tops with oil, turn over, and move to indirect heat. Sprinkle cut sides with cinnamon sugar. Cover grill and cook until sugar is melted and fruit is tender, 10 to 15 minutes.

Serve with vanilla ice cream (sprinkle on extra cinnamon sugar if you like)

Hello Readers!

This month being Teacher appreciation month, I want to send a special shot out to teachers everywhere. Hey hey hey!

Teaching is an art that is hard to master and rarely appreciated. However, I believe that teaching

and education of others is a truly joyous gift that is so crucial to the development of our youth and

evolution of the adult population. To properly impart knowledge on to another individual involves

much more than being knowledgeable. Really and truly a real instructor must understand how to

engage their students in the new subject matter and cement it in their memory. No easy matter!

Furthermore, the success of one’s teaching is intricately related to that individual’s personal

investment. Frequently, teachers lack the recognition deserved them and instead struggle with

the complaints of a voluminous few. Given their critical role in the development of our society’s

intellect, I have always been surprised by this under-appreciation. With the economic recession

and consequential budget cuts, the education situation has progressively deteriorated. Recent

California propositions could potentially result in 7000 employees in the Los Angeles School

District. Classrooms are already overcrowded and recurrently fail to provide the special attention

that is needed to properly educate our youth. Please read more in this week’s LA Times

A great teacher is hard to find and I am certain that most of us have a recollect a select few in

our lifetimes. It seems limited funding and lack of attention is an unlikely way to increases their

Special Mother's Day Rememberance and Breast Cancer Spotlight

Hello dear readers,

This week I bring you a topic of great personal importance. May 7th marks the date of Revlon’s EIF’s Revlon Run/Walk For Women. This fundraiser which was instated in 1972 benefits the sufferers of breast cancer and the research of of the illness. Programs include counseling, outreach, and general assistance for those that bear the burde pf breat cancer.

My own Grandma struggled with breast cancer and eventually perished due to the disease. Observing chemo and the aftermath was heart-wrenching and very painful to encounter. The difficulties of her treatment were ameliorated tremendously with the support of foundations like Revlon Run/Walk and ACS,

Given her inability to drive, cab vouchers and grocery delivery were provided. As her hair fell off wigs were made available and resources to cope with the grief/ There is a certain inexpressible value women place on their hair and breasts. These elements are an extension the person and ingrained into their concept of self. Consider the pain of having a fatal disease in addition to a lack of consistency in one’s self-image and the resulting grief that occurs.

My Grandmother dealt with all of these struggles and still managed to joke with me on the way to chemo that “we better hurry, so we could make it the bar.”’ Would she have maintained that positive spirit without the support of beneficiary groups? I am uncertain. Nonetheless, I want to express my personal and the company’s commendation for their efforts and assistance provided. Also, I would encourage you to give your support via donation or participation int the Revlon Run/Walk.

This week, I want to detail a brief guide to fundraiser planning and execution. So without any further ado.....

First up, your organization will probably delineate the cost of all programs and operations in addition to current sources of funding. Following a clear calculation of remaining financial needs has been established, a fundraising plan must be created and executed.

Part of the fundraising plan is likely to include one or perhaps several fundraisers. A successful fundraiser demands considerable planning and brainstorming. Several components be considered:

Total fundraiser goal
Event timeline and deadline

What dates work with your organization's agenda?
When are the funds first necessitated?

Appoint leadership that possesses the time and passion to deliver the best possible event
Brainstorm with committee members to pick an event that will generate the most interest amongst organization and social associates
Choose a venue that is in a close geographic proximity and caters to attendees' comfort zones
Calculate total event costs and ensure that funds raised will more than cover expenses
Delegate event tasks amongst committee and organization members

Exciting news this week…April 22nd marks the D&E Casino’s 20th anniversary!!!!!

Wow, this is kinda amazing for me in particular to contemplate. Given that I was present for the company’s inception, childhood, and later maturation… I feel extremely happy to announce this celebration and reflect on the past 20 years here.

For all of those that have never heard the inception story here she is:

The scene. Dashing Daniel and smashing Ellie were a striking duo that owned the party circuit with a panache that could not be rivaled by any James Bond character or old money debutante.

The Plot. Recently endowed with two crazy adorable and intelligent children named Jennifer and Holly, Dan told Ellie “Babe we gotta settle down a bit. For the little ones,” Knowing he was right, Ellie agreed and hung up her dancing shoes… The months progressed and Ellie felt an itch growing. It started on her ear, moved to the nose, the lips, progressed to the stomach, and finalized in the toes. Her agitation grew and upon many a fruitless visit to her local physician, she began to despair that her condition would never get better. Perhaps she would maintain this state for the rest of her life, tormented with an ever-present itch, perhaps……she was cursed to be FOREVER itchy.

Knowing the deep despair of his wife, Dan counseled Ellie to investigate alternative medicine, knitting, yoga, underwater basket weaving, and some new modes of recreation. Following many soggy baskets and toppled downward dogs, Ellie attended a Nordstrom’s fragrance fair…… A momentous decision in today’s tale. A momentous decision indeed. At the event she encountered a frantic woman. Eyes bloodshot from wepping, hair a mess, and clothes askew. The woman hovered over two blackjack tables.

“Oh woe is me;” cried the woman “What oh what shall I do? “The woman languished in her own self-pity. Sensing a friendly ear in Ellie, she continued “My reputation is ruined; I will be banished from my department.” After that the hysterical woman burst into a fit of wails and violent heaving.
“Wh-wh-what is the matter????” inquired Ellie “Please what can I do to help?”
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing,” stopping to wipe a torrent of tears from her eyes, a ray of hope entered her person “Unless, you happen to deal blackjack?”.
“I do,” pause “My husband and I host blackjack soirees on a frequent basis,”
Ellie proceeded to host a fabulous blackjack party that wowed all of the fragrance fair attendees and provided the impetus for a life changing proposition. The proposition of a company.

Next day, thinking cap on, Ellie approached Dan with the plan. The plan that dramatically affected the upbringing Holly and Jennifer. The plan that spawned D&E Casino.
The Climax. “Well Dan,” Ellie began “I have a plan.” “A plan?” he asked. “Yes, a plan. Let’s start company. A casino rental company.”
He smiled. She smiled.
The itch left her toes, receded from her belly, move off of her lips, the nose, and finally freed itself from her ears.

20 years later. The striking duo nurtures the child of that random evening. D&E Casino.

Recollections of Easter and Hop Wrap Party!

Hola Readers!

I am happy to announce that Easter is close close close! One of my favorite holidays as a youngster, in part because of my Mom's enthusiasm, I still get a little excited as Easter Sunday approached. On the note of my Mom’s enthusiasm.....

Ellie Bingham, D&E Casino’s co-founder and my mother, has always entered ultra-festive mode early in April. I am uncertain if her initials, EB, or Easter’s religious significance that lend to her excitement.... but nonetheless, I have many a memory receiving Easter cards April 5th and partaking in Easter-egg hunts, all of which resulted in beautiful memories and my maintained excitement for Easter.

Last month something really fun came D&E Casino’s way! Hop wrap party! Contracted by the movie-makers of their newly released movie, Hop , we provided casino games and some stellar dealers to celebrate the successful completion of this light-hearted family film.Coincidentally the movie revolves around E.B., the teenage son of the Easter Bunny. Although initially uncertain and hesitant to assume his duties as the next Easter Bunny, E.B. eventually realizes the importance of his father’s duties and accepts the appointment.

There is some true joy in the fantastic tradition of the Easter Bunny. The excitement that he brings to children and the family gatherings that occur on Easter day are the substance of life. Without joy and quality contact with our loved ones, life is a barren field that lacks the beauty of a single flower. I thank my E.B. for this appreciation and hope that everyone who watches Hop may gain some of the same happiness.

Well its not here yet, but yay get ready for Easter! Give everyone else some ideas, and share some of your Easter plans here!!!!!

Everyone's favorite decision maker Sandy Bingham brought the current food-truck trend to the company's attention and suggested that we capitalize on this new market. Popularized by the Food Network and Pop-culture, gourmet food vehicle have are more and more prevalent across Los Angeles. In front of night-life locations, convention centers, music performances, and appreciation parties these new mobile restaurants offer many cuisine types for an affordable convenient price.

Spring Time Party!

Although its cold outside, Spring is offically here! Outdoor parties are less popular in Spring than Summer, but I think the Garden Party is just as important an occasion. Sooooo this post is dedicated to a produce-filled menu that works perfectly for any dining aalfresco occasion.

First the Appetizer:
Grilled Fontina Pizza with Asparagus and Scallions
Ingredients

6 thin asparagus spears

3 scallions

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

One 12-ounce ball pizza dough

3 ounces fontina cheese, shredded

1 tablespoon finely grated pecorino cheese

1 teaspoon oregano leaves, torn

Directions

Toss the asparagus and scallions with 1 teaspoon of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the asparagus and scallions on high heat, until lightly charred and tender, about 2 minutes.
On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the pizza dough to an 1/8-inch-thick oval. Rub both sides of the dough with the remaining 1 teaspoon olive oil. Grill the pizza dough over moderate heat, turning once, until crisp and lightly charred, about 2 minutes per side.

Top the crust with the asparagus, scallions, fontina and pecorino. Return the pizza to the grill, cover and cook until the cheese is melted, about 1 minute. Sprinkle with the oregano and season with pepper. Cut into slices and serve.

Second the Drink:
Mango Sour

1 cup mango nectar

3/4 cup vodka

1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

3 tablespoons superfine granulated sugar

Directions

Stir together nectar, vodka, lemon juice, and sugar in a 1-quart glass measure. Shake half of mixture in cocktail shaker half filled with ice cubes until cold, about 30 seconds. Strain into glasses half filled with ice cubes. Shake and strain remaining nectar mixture in same manner.

Next the Entree:
Grilled Tuna over Lemon-Mint Barley Salad

Ingredients

3/4 cup finely chopped fresh mint, divided

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, divided

3/4 teaspoon salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

3 garlic cloves, minced

4 (6-ounce) Yellowfin tuna steaks

2 1/4 cups water

1 cup uncooked pearl barley

2 cups chopped tomato

3/4 cup chopped green onions

2 tablespoons capers

2 tablespoons chopped pitted kalamata olives

1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil

Cooking spray

Direections

Combine 1/2 cup mint, lemon rind, 4 teaspoons lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, and garlic in a shallow dish; add tuna, turning to coat. Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes.
Combine 1/4 teaspoon salt and water in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Stir in barley; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 5 minutes. Spoon barley into a large bowl; cool slightly. Add remaining 1/4 cup mint, tomato, green onions, capers, and olives; stir well to combine. Combine remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and oil, stirring well with a whisk. Drizzle over barley mixture; toss gently to coat. Set aside.
Prepare grill or broiler.

Place tuna steaks on a grill rack or broiler pan coated with cooking spray; cook 2 minutes on each side until tuna steaks are medium-rare or until desired degree of doneness. Spoon about 1 1/2 cups barley mixture onto each of 4 plates; top each serving with 1 tuna steak.

Finally the Dessert

Individual Lemon Meringue Tarts

Ingredients

Pastry:

11/2 pounds short crust pastry, recipe follows

Filling:

2 cups lemon juice

6 eggs

6 egg yolks

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Meringue:

4 egg whites

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 cup sugar

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
For the pastry: Roll the pastry to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 6 (6-inch) rounds. Place the pastry in 6 (4-inch) tart molds. With a knife trim the excess pastry. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Line each tart shell with a piece of parchment paper and fill to the rim with pie weights.
Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Remove the pie weights and parchment from the tart shells and bake for 10 minutes.
For the filling: Whisk together the lemon juice, eggs, yolks, sugar, and vanilla extract.
Pour the lemon mixture into a medium pot. Place over medium heat and stir with a spatula for about 5 minutes, until the mixture begins to thicken. Pour the lemon mixture onto a baking sheet and cool completely.
Spoon the cooled lemon mixture or curd into the baked tart shells
For the meringue: Beat the egg whites with the vanilla extract and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Continue beating while adding the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time. The finished meringue should have stiff glossy peaks. Mound the meringue on top of the tarts.
Make sure there is a good seal between the meringue and the edge of the crust. Bake the tarts in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the meringue is golden. Let cool for 15 minutes before removing from the molds.

Spring is sprung!

Attention Readers! The first day of spring is approaching!

March 20th will mark the commencement of spring and from historical precedence the celebration of new life and beginnings. Not only is spring marked with birth and harvest, but the re-birth of oneself is just as notable.

So let’s recreate people! In conjunction with the change of seasons, the slightly chaotic happenings of our current world, makes re-innovation extremely relevant. The strife in the middle-east and tsunami aftermath are clear indicators that change is needed in several long-established societal systems. While broad societal changes are seemingly intangible, evolution in our business and personal realms are quite attainable. Modifying oneself and regular activities is scary, exciting, and the source self-realization Furthermore, individual altercations build into those intangible societal revolutions.

D&E Casino has begun with small steps to protect our environment from further environmental waste. We are transitioning into a green workplace; including recycled paper, biodegradable chemical products, and conservation of energy-use. It is our hope that more businesses and households will join the growing trend towards sustainable lifestyle and eventually set a environmentally-kind standard. All of us can find reasonable means to contribute to the improvement of our world and personal lives. So step up, look for the problems, find a small solution, and go for it. Capture the season and capture your life.

Devastation in Japan: A way to help

I am back form the chilly chilly chilly Chicago! Unfortunately this post is notregarding cheery subject matter.

As everyone is now aware, Japan was hit by a 8.9 magnitude earthquake that has resulted in the loss of life and displacement of thousands. In addition, nuclear contamination may ensue following the hydrogen explosion at at a nuclear power plant. The situation is currently bleak and international efforts are attempting to alleviate and repair damages.

While the damages are currently beyond comprehension, it is not impossible or futile to provide assistance. I would like to share a charity-drive that D&E Casino is hosting in conjunction with St. Cyprian Church of Lakewood. We will be accepting donations and help to provide the Japanese children with a small comfort amidst the chaos, Easter baskets. Please call 562-925-1957 or email decasino@aol.com to discuss your monetary or product donations for the baskets. St. Cyprian's will locate the appropriate channels for overseas distribution. We welcome any suggestions or comments on this regard and look forward to your responses.

We are sending our love and thoughts to those effected by this devastating natural disaster. Please take the time to appreciate the simple graces that your are currently enjoying and a few ways that you can help those that are currently suffering.

Approaching quickly is the every Irish gal’s ( me included) favorite holiday... St. Patrick’s Day!!!

St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally a Catholic holiday which celebrates Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick. St. Patrick is said to have escaped slavery in Ireland with the word of God, which he then studied in Britain. Later he returned to Ireland and utilized the shamrock as a visual aid to instruct those of “pagan” religion on the holy trinity. In modern times, the holiday has progressed into something of a more secular nature. Most folks align St. Patrick’s Day with Leprechauns bringing good luck and the subsequent discovery of pots of gold. For others March 17th is the day to hit the local Irish Pub and drink some good Guinness and Potatoes.

My first thought, why restrict fabulous Irish beer and some hearty potatoes to select days of the year. Secondly, the correlation that is drawn between the Irish and Luck, is noteworthy and deserves some closer attention. There are several contributors to the popular conception of the Irish:

The national symbol of Ireland, the Shamrock, is oftentimes mistaken for the good luck clover that is found any standard deck of cards.

Irish mythological creature, the leprechaun, are attributed with the power of granting 3 wishes to any human carries out a successful capture

Historically the Irish have been exploited and colonized and maybe quite unlucky

In California, many Irish were very successful in gold and silver mining, and were consequently associated with luck

Hello my readers!!! I hope everyone is more than fabulous this Monday. I am feeling a bit drabulous with this less than desirable weather, but alas not my subject topic for today. On the flip, today I bring you a public service announcement regarding... Carbon Footprints!

We produce harmful greenhouse gas with most of our activities including; food, housing, transportation and most everything else. Greenhouse gas is implicated in climate change and other detrimental environment effects. Thus, it is quite important for all of us to become more conscious of our behavior and contributions to atmospheric damage.

I want to highlight one place that we can change our behavior: Party preparation and throwing. A few ways to green up your party:

Buy party produce organic and local.

Organic food is cultivated with less harmful chemicals and given that it is locally grown, there is less emissions produced by crop transport.

Ditch bottled water.

Bottled water has a huge carbon footprint — it's bottled at one location in small plastic bottles and shipped all over. Rather than serving water bottles, provide guests with pitchers of water flavored with fruit. Tasty and sustainable!

Serve meat Alternatives: Seafood and Vegetarian Dishes

Estimates by the UNFDA speculate that the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Raising of livestock also contributes to fossil fuel dependency. The average feed lot of beef utilizes 40 calories of fossil for every calorie of meat. Websites like epicurious.com and cookinglight.com provide great meatless recipes that will please party-goers of all forms. .

Setup carpools

One of the biggest ways that we can reduce harmful chemical levels, is by reducing the amount that we emit with vehicles and other technology. Arrange for guests that live close to one another carpool. Make it easy on guests and pre-organize groups and drivers...

Elimination Blackjack.. Tournament Style Blackjack

HELLO READERS!!!! And no I am not an Animaniac….. However, I do have a fun topic for us this week: Blackjack Tourneys or Elimination blackjack.

Similar to a Texas Hold’em Tournament, Elimination Blackjack events result in one discernable winner who is designated from the original player-pool. Players are subtracted from the competition via elimination rounds and other rules of engagement.

One round of Elimination Blackjack consists in thirty blackjack hands. Each player begins the tourney with a designated number of chips. Every organization may have their own specific rules, but they following represent the most common rules:

The house must hit on soft 17 and anything below, and must stay on hard 17 and anything above.

Excepting aces, A player may split pairs up to four times.

The game is dealt from a 6-deck shoe.

Surrender is allowed: one half of their original bet can be recovered following the abandonment of one’s hand

When the house shows an ace, players have an opportunity to buy insurance.

Hands greater than two cards cannot be doubled down on

Each player must act on their hand within forty-five seconds.

Soooo the next question: How is one eliminated from play:

1. Losing all of their chips/cheddar/dough/benjis

2. Lack funds to make a minimum bet

3. On designated “elimination” hands, possessing the least amount of chips in comparison to fellow players

On a more obvious note the last player remaining is the tourney winner. Fun stuff!!!

Already widely organized in Vegas, Elimination Blackjack is gaining popularity for private parties. Unlike the sometimes daunting texas hold’em games, Blackjack is accessible to people from a larger range of ages, personalities, and backgrounds.

Princess Ellie and the Magical Blue Bird

Love is in the air... love is in the air... everywhere you look around! Happy early Valentines Day! Valentines Day is a holiday that traditionally celebrates the love and affection that exists amongst friends, family, and lovers. To be quite frank, I am not a large proponent of the holiday. My objection is not to love itself, but intead the commercialization of relationships. Your care and excitement for another individuals cannot be restricted to one day a year, and furthermore love cannot be expressed by candy and flowers. Its not a tangible phenomena, and thus we must celebrate it as such.

D&E Casino has a love story of its own. The owners and operators of D&E Casino, Dan and Ellie Bingham, are the subject of today’s tale.

Many years ago in a country far far away, there was a beautiful princess from Illinois that had taken refuge in a bustling city, Glen of Lakewood. Princess Ellie was amazed by her new surroundings, all the people and events were of great fascination to her. Unfortunately Princess Ellie’s evil father would only allow her to leave the house for school. Watching all of the other boys and girls play outside, Poor Ellie sat in her room crying sad sad tears. One day a magical blue bird came to Ellie’s window “chirp chirp come closer,” said the bird. Surprised but intrigued, Ellie walked to the bird. Without any notice, the bird puffed itself full of air, beat its wings, and Ellie was transported away form her room and to the wooded glen that surrounded the city.

What awaited her was beyond comprehension. A gushing strwam played sweet music as glowing children, river nymphs, and spring elfs danced in the reeds. Large golden fruit lay in floating baskets and plum wine sprang from rocks. Ellie was swept away by the dancers and played until daybreak. The magical bird arrived and transported her back to the gated prison that was her home. After school the next night the bird arrived again and took Ellie to magical glen..

This happened night after night for the next year, until finally the Evil King suspected that something was amiss with his daughter’s behavior and barred her windows with thick iron beams. Ellie cried and cried until the blue bird arrived. “oh little blue bird, I cannot go tonight,” She cried and cried. Her tears grew so heavy that Ellie’s room started flood. As the water level rose higher, some tears spilled out the window and touched the bird’s feathers. Within seconds, the feathers fell away, wings grew to legs, beak to nose, and finally a handsome prince appeared. “ Prince Dan at your service;” he cried. Slashing the bars with his scepter, Dan took Ellie away to wooded glen where they stay till this day. Far away from the Evil King and his frolicking bans, they spend their days eating rich fruit, dancing, and singing everyday.

She provides excellent assistance in accounting, staff booking, customer service, and.......... Well a lot of things.

At her entry with D&E Casino, Lisa was publicly a bit shy but always diligent to her tasks and a pleasure to have on-hand. Her sweet disposition and supportive tendencies are noteworthy and readily welcomed Over the last 3 years, we have witnessed Lisa mature and evolve as an individual. We are excited to hear and take part in her impending adventures. .

The meaning of life....more specifically parties

Hello gaming fans! I am back for round two with our new and improved blog. Here we are amidst summer in January??? Good times!!! For all of those less unfortunate living in another state.. well I am sorry and I hope you can relocate soon.

On to other news, the craziness of holiday rushing and galas is calming down and parties are back to relaxed affairs that allow us to breathe and really enjoy the company of others. Maybe this is just me, but I find that the holidays can be rather exhausting with the dashing to and fro-- while looking for gifts-- traveling to family and work engagements. After a while, all of the hectic activities become too much!

My worry is that the madness of the holidays can both distract from and devalue the beauty of having of those we love nearby and... having a good time! No ifs ands or buts about it, but merriment is one of my greatest passions, which i am certain many a folk share.

So my mission for all those lovers of merriment and those that are a tad bit frightened of the concept:

Find a way to have pure fun this week!

Get out there and have fun for you. A party is about experiencing an enjoyable time with those that you love and here is the important part: Re CREATING you. Use this merriment as time for rejuvenation and refreshment. Go from your usual humdrum existence into something velvet or perhaps violently fizzy. Whatever suits your fancy, go for it!!!! Embrace it do it and report back with your discoveries feedback or whatever it is that you encounter. Hmmmmm let me restate, so long as it is appropriate for general reading. News Flash: this past Thursday, Iraq, U.S. Troops transitioned from a comabtive force to an advisory presence. In their new role U.S Troops should function mainly as a support and training resource to Iraqi operations..... After all of the uproar surrounding the war and withdraw, it is almost unreal that the withdraw has finally occurred.

I will not delve into political opinions, but instead want to appreciate the humanity that is invested across the world in the armed forces. The Bingham family has quite a few loved ones that served, serve, or will serve our country as a member of the United States Military. I truly commend those that endure the isolation, physical duress, mental challenges that are implicit to the duties of soldier. Really and truly its an accomplishment that few individuals can proclaim. To our armed forces! In all their strength and perseverance..

While reading Special Event Magazine this week I came across the following article:

Corporate Event Market Looking Up in 2010 and 2011, Special Events Survey Says: "The mood in the corporate special event community is definitely picking up, according to the annual Special Events Corporate Event Marketplace study, which will be released next month. The ninth edition shows growing event rosters, with 18 percent of respondents saying they expect to stage more events in 2010 than they did in 2009, and 35 percent predicting even more event work in 2011. This is a big improvement over last year's study, when a whopping 38 percent of respondents said they expected to stage fewer events in 2009 than they did in 2008.
A third of respondents predict that their company's budget allocation for special events will remain the same in 2011 as 2010. Forty-one percent predict their company will allocate more money to special events in 2011, while 19 percent say their company will likely allocate less to events.
Corporate events mean business, now more than ever. The percentage of respondents saying they attempt to measure the ROI of their events is up to 57 percent this year, the highest rate seen since the survey started in 2002. That year, only 28 percent said they attempt to measure event ROI."

This past Sunday, D&E Casino Services was lucky enough to have the opportunity to provide entertainment at a 82nd Birthday party. Co-founder of Lynda.com. Lynda Weiman, requested a patient and compassionate dealer, for her father's poker-themed birthday celebration. One of our favorite poker dealers, Evan Davis, was an easy choice for the gig and was well-received by party-goers and the hostess. Obviously party-success is of vital importance, yet this blog is dedicated to the hostess, Lynda Weiman.

Along with her husband, Lynda Weiman is the co-founder of Lynda.com, which specializes in software-training. Lynda.com offers consumers a chance to master the technology that has remained elusive and past their comprehension. Party Planning Checklist: Your Party Made Easy

Well all, we are half-way through summer party season. Which while fun can be a bit stressful!!

So I have simplified your party preparation with a detailed list of steps to make sure your next bash is an absolute hit.....

Party Planning Checklist

Make an invitation list. Remeber that usually 70 percent of guests will show up. Decide on a theme, if desired. Send invitations via Mail, e-mail, even phone invites are all acceptable. Coordinate invitations and the food menu with your theme. Pre-plan with a shopping list and cooking timetable.
2 weeks beforehand.....

Hire any waitstaff or party entertainment at least two weeks before. Remember that service people work on a as-needed basis and will need to schedule your event.

Clean your linens and glassware or purchase plastic utensils/tableclothes. Choose an upbeat and varied playlist of music that all of your guests will enjoy. Note that Itunes has compilation playlist that are grouped by theme.
Complete any advanced grocery shopping and cooking. Prepare any dishes that can be frozen.

One week beforehand.....

Early in the week, do a detailed cleaning job and arrange furniture to accomodate your expected guest count. Plan on touch ups for 15 minutes a day until the big event. Plan you bar: three bottles of wine for every four people, three to four cocktails per guest for a two- to three-hour cocktail party. Alcohol can be purchased at BevMo or Costco for very reeasonable prices.

Three days before...

Be considerate and tell your neighbors to expect extra noise and less parking on the day of your party. Typically, your best bet is to invite them as a guest. Make a detailed timeline of cooking preparation and doublecheck the ingredient list.

One Day Before

Set up tables or buffet and chairs. Place trash cans throughout the house to cut down on later cleanup. Anticipate spills and have plenty of paper towels, club soda, and other stain removers avilable. Buy and arrange flowers. Do all possible prep work for your food selections.

Day of...
Finish any last bits of cooking. Try to save yourself a headache and keep day-of-cooking to a minimum. the cooking ! .Display food. About two hours before guests arrive, set out appetizers and snacks that won’t perish at room temperature. Give yourself 30 minutes to relax and freshen up before guests arrive.... And lastly Enjoy!!!!!!!!

Celebration of Fathers

Woohoo!!!!!!! This Sunday I get to celebrate my favorite man in this world, who happens to be co-owner and of D&E casino Services. From the of its inception in 1924, Fathers' day has been a Holiday that revolves around a special dinner and thanksgiving for fathers. As such, I was inspired to share two recipes which i am sure my father and yours would enjoy:

Guinness-Braised Chuck Steak and Horseradish Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

Steak:

1 1/2 pounds boneless chuck steak, trimmed

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 1/2 cups finely chopped onion

1/2 cup chopped carrot

1/2 cup fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth, divided

1 teaspoon dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

1 (8-ounce) package presliced mushrooms

1 garlic clove, minced

2 bay leaves

1 (12-ounce) bottle Guinness Stout

Potatoes:

2 pounds peeled baking potatoes, quartered

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 cup fat-free milk

1/4 cup finely chopped green onions

1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream

2 tablespoons prepared horseradish

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Preparation

1.To prepare steak, sprinkle steak with 1/2 teaspoon pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add steak; cook 5 minutes on each side or until browned. Remove steak from pan; set aside. Add 1 1/2 cups onion, chopped carrot, 2 tablespoons broth, and sugar. Cover, reduce heat to medium, and cook 10 minutes. Stir in rosemary, mushrooms, and garlic. Cover and cook 2 minutes. Add bay leaves, stout, remaining broth, and steak; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 1 hour and 30 minutes or until steak is tender.
2.To prepare potatoes, place potatoes in a large saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil; simmer 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender; drain. Return potatoes to pan. Add butter; beat with a mixer at medium speed just until smooth. Stir in remaining ingredients. Keep warm.

3.Remove steak from pan; keep warm. Discard bay leaves. Increase heat to medium-high; cook 5 minutes or until slightly thickened. Spoon stout mixture over steak. Serve with potatoes.

Celebration of Mothers; the human population's cheerleaders

Firstly, i would like to apologize for the lapse in writing last week, I fell ill last week and was unable to channel my productive energies. But TADA!!!!!!!!! I am back baby.

Like many other people in this world, when I fall ill, my mother is most typically the person that takes estra care to ensure that I return to my healthy state. Mothers are characteristic for their impressive abilities to multi-task, think of everything (maybe too much), and above all take-care of their children. My mother is also D&E Casino Service's resident mother, Ellie Bingham. Ellie is known for bopping around the casino floor, checking in with dealers, sympathizing with the latest problem, distributing water, or finding ibuprofen. The company is extremely lucky to have her as is my family.

This Sunday, Mothers Day, the American population celebrates mothers everywhere, which I think is more than wonderful. Where would we be without them?............ Well technically speaking we wouldn't exist and figuratively we would be a sickly and grumpy.

19th Anniversary!

Today's post is especially exciting. This week D&E Casino Services celebrates its 19th anniversary.

Wow! Its unbelievable to me as the owners' daughter to process the company history is now 19 years long. I can honestly remember the very first events and major company expansions. Its amazing to think that our stock of table games has evolved from one blackjack table to 100 GAMES! From a dealing staff of a select family and friends, our roster now includes 140 dealers.

Logistically the company has dramatically changed. One of the largest factors that facilitated D&E Casino Service's current state is the internet. With the wide-availability of internet-use, D&E Casino was able to reach a large population of folks, who had no idea recreational casino gaming existed. Second most important input to the company's evolution occurred when my sister, Jennifer Bingham, stepped into full-time management with the company. Jen brought a fresh vision and stubborn refusal to compromise, which intersected my parents' same stubbornness, to produce a healthy flow of ideas and innovative business directions.

So, yes the breadth of D&E casino is far different than 19 years again, but no the basic direction and purpose has never altered. When it comes down to it, we are a family owned and operated production that values wellllllll, fun! Events are business, however our point is to put on a good party. And a good party is what we bring. Although, we arte now 140 independent contractors strong, many dealers began as or friends/family or quickly became so. We embrace our team and clients and treat them like our own. This familial attitude is an cornerstone of the company and it will never be compromised.

So cheers to D&E Casino Services and all those individuals that have aided in our progression and current success !!!!!!!!!!

Dal Jones Memorial Fundraiser

This past Sunday, all of us at D&E Casino, were pleased to contribute to the Dal Jones Memorial Poker Tournament Fundraiser. Mr. Jones passed away on Febuary 16, 2010 He left a wife and two children (ages 1 and 3) behind when he died from surgery complications. Mr. Jones was known to many becasue his involvement at Hollywood Park Race Track.

The Dal Jones IV Fund contracted D&E Casino Services for 30 poker tables at an event Hollywood Park Casino. the fund was established to give Mr. Jones' young family assistance. The party was a success and plenty of funds were raised for the cause. We were happy to showcase our new poker tables.

Irish national card game: Twenty-Five

Given that this wednesday is St. Patricks Day, the Americanized "Irish" holiday, I would like to present the national card game of Ireland, twenty-Five..... Yes you read correctly 25----not 21.

So the basic rundown of 25:

25 is played by 2–8 persons, five being the best number. When three play at this game, it is still necessary that one of them should win the three tricks in order to make a Five, as the stakes must remain for the next game if two of the players get two tricks each, and the other one. If the party consists of four, they play in two partnerships, which are determined by cutting the cards, the two lowest playing against the two highest, or by agreement among the parties.

Each player starts with a pre-arranged amount of chips determined by the table.The pool is started with one chip from each and usually limited to a certain maximum, allthough each dealer is required to "tit-up" the pool

The deal

The turn to deal and play always passes to the left, and after the first hand, each player deals in rotation. Where the game is strictly played, the person who misdeals, or who departs from the order with which the game began, of dealing either the three or the two cards first, forfeits his stake. Stack the rest face down, turning the topmost card for trumps.

Robbing

If the turn-up is an Ace, the dealer may "rob" the trump, i.e. put out, face downwards, any card from his hand and take in the Ace, but the trump suit remains unaltered. If the holder of the trump Ace does not wish to rob, and does not announce the fact that he holds it before playing to the first trick, then, whenever he does play it, it counts as the lowest trump. Similarly a player who holds the Ace of trumps may himself rob the trump at any time before playing to the first trick, putting out any card and taking in the turn-up, but need not disclose the fact until it is his turn to play. A player who fails to rob cannot go out that hand. The card put out may not be seen. Robbing must take place before the first player on the dealers left, leads. Some players make "robbing" optional

So it will be seen that when the suit is not trump, the Ace of Diamonds is the worst card in the pack, when the suit is trump it is the fourth best card in the game. When Hearts are trumps, there is no Ace of trumps and whether trumps or not, the Deuce of Clubs or Spades is better than all plain cards in their respective suit.

The play

The player on the dealers left leads first. Players must follow suit whenever is possible and the highest card of the suit led or the highest trump, wins the trick. Each player must follow suit when trump is led, under the penalty of forfeiting his stake, except in the case of the three best trump cards, the Five, Knave and the Ace of Hearts, each of which is privileged to renounce. If a player takes three tricks he wins the game. If no one succeeds there is a spoil, and a fresh stake, smaller than the original one as a rule, is put into the pool for the next round.

Reneging

When trumps are led, the Five and the Knave of trumps, and the Ace ♥, need not be played. This is called reneging (colloquially, "renigging"). The Five may always renege: if it is led, no card can renege. The Knave may renege if the Five is played, not led. Only the Five can renege to the Knave led. The Ace ♥ can renege to any inferior card. If Hearts are not trumps and the Ace ♥ is led, a trump must be played if possible, if not, it is not necessary to play a Heart.

Jinking

At Spoil-five a player winning the first three tricks straight off may claim the pool without further play. If however, he leads to the fourth trick (described as "jinking"), he thereby is obliged to win all five. If he elects to jink and fails, he cannot score during that hand. A player who jinks, if jinking is agreed upon, receives an extra stake all around.

Pay-off

If no one wins the three tricks, or if a player jinked and failed to win all five, the game is said to have been "spoiled". Everyone then adds another chip to the pool, which is carried forward to the next deal. Otherwise, whoever took three tricks wins the pool, with an additional chip from each opponent if he took all five.

A Peek at Baccarat: Shhhhhh!

Baccarat is a lesser know casino game that originated in Italy and was later introduced into popularity in France during the 1400's.

Game Breakdown:
Each player is dealt 2 cards face down. Both cards are then turned over and added together in which the dealer calls out the total. The subsequent action depend on the cards' sum.

If either the Player or the Banker achieves a total of 8 or 9 on the initial deal (known as a 'natural'), no further cards are drawn. If not, play proceeds as follows.
If the Player has an initial total of 0-5, the Player draws a single card. If the Player has an initial total of 6 or 7, he stands.
The Banker's play depends on the Banker's initial hand, on whether the Player drew a card, and on what card the Player drew:
If the Player did not draw a card, the Banker draws if he has 0-5, and stands if he has 6-7.
If the Player drew a 2 or 3, the Banker draws if he has 0-4, and stands if he has 5-7.
If the Player drew a 4 or 5, the Banker draws if he has 0-5, and stands if he has 6-7.
If the Player drew a 6 or 7, the Banker draws if he has 0-6, and stands if he has 7.
If the Player drew an 8, the Banker draws if he has 0-2, and stands if he has 3-7.
If the Player drew an ace, 9, 10, or face-card, the Banker draws if he has 0-3, and stands if he has 4-7.

In Las Vegas baccarat is oftentimes separated from the main action, in a private room, and played by primarily "high-rollers". However for your private party, everyone is welcome to learn and play the game. Our dealers are pleased to help your guests become acquainted with game.

Master Roulette Lingo!

One of the most frequently requested casino games at D&E Casino Services, is Roulette.

Roulette was invented and popularized in France. Thus, much of the roulette slang is also of French origin. This week's post is devoted to such jargon:

American wheel: This is a roulette wheel with 0 and 00.

Biased wheel: This is a wheel that favors particular sections of numbers out of proportion to probability, due to flaws in manufacture or replacement. Extremely rare and not recommended to be counted on.

Column bet: This is a wager that any one of the numbers in the 3 columns of 12 numbers will come up.

Corner bet: This is a single wager that is made on 4 numbers at a time by placing a bet on the point where the boxes of 4 numbers meet.

Croupier: European name for a dealer. Also commonly used when playing baccarat.

Dozen: This is a wager on either the first dozen numbers (1-12), the second dozen (13-24), or the third dozen (25-36). This bet pays 2 to 1.

En prison: This is an option only allowed when playing a European wheel when a 0 comes up. Even-money wagers are held over to the next roll instead of being lost.

European wheel: This is a roulette wheel where there are 37 pockets. It does not have the 00 that the American wheel has. This is the recommended type of wheel to play roulette on if you can find one online.

Inside: These are bets made on the individual numbers or combinations of these numbers on a layout closest to the dealer.

Line bet: When playing roulette this is a 6 number wager covering 2 adjacent rows of numbers, placed on one of the outside lines at the intersection of 2 rows.

Outside: This is a wager made on the outer part of the layout, furthest from the dealer. This includes even-money wagers, column bets, and even dozen bets.

Pocket: This is simply the slot where the ball will rest - marked by numbers 00, 0-36.

Street: This is a bet placed on a set of 3 numbers.

Below, you will find a complete list of terms you are most likely due to hear at a European roulette casino game. Not every European wheel feature only French terms, but if you are playing this casino game at a French online casino or in say Monte Carlo, you will want familiarize yourself with these terms.

En plein - Straight-up bet.

A cheval - Split bet.

Transversale - Street bet.

Carre - Corner bet.

Sixaine - Line bet.

Rouge/noir - Red/black.

Impair/pair - Odd/even.

Passe/manque - High/low.

Douzaine - Dozen bet.

Colonne - Column bet.

Below, are a few bets that are typically available in European casinos:

Quatre premiers - The first 4 numbers (0, 1, 2, 3)

Quatre derniers - The final 4 numbers (33, 34, 35 and 36)

Voisins - A neighbor bet. A number and the 2 numbers on either side of it on the wheel.

With your resident blogger on a break this week, I wanted to take the opportunity to profile my daughter and D&E Social Media Associate, Holly Bingham.

Over a year ago, Holly approached me about increasing our social media presence. I was excited about this new company venture and let Holly head the project. Her job includes social networking, writing Monday blog entries, and updating our Facebook profile.

Holly has worked with D&E Casino Services for 10 years. Her first job with the company was as a pit clerk, in which she assisted pit bosses at event locations. Over the 10 years, Holly has transitioned into a variety of positions with D&E Casino Services. During this period she also matured into the woman that she is today.

The woman that Holly is today is the product of infinite factors, but in particular her education and family foundation have significantly influenced her maturity and direction in life. When Holly was a child, I instilled upon her the joy of education with nightly reading and an ample supply of exciting literature. A love for education led Holly to independently pursue higher education at UCLA, where she earned her BA in psychology in 3 years. Holly shared her passion for education with young South Korean students, when she taught at a private school in Cheong-ju, South Korea for a half a year. Holly returned to Southern California (Lakewood, CA) feeling thankful for her wonderful family and friends. As a mother, I instilled the importance of familial and friendly relationships through Sunday Family Time, Daughter-Mother Lunches, and welcoming all of Holly's friends into our home. As a result of her familial values, Holly decided to take additional roles with the family company.

Who Holly is as a person, goes beyond education and career decisions. If i could describe her in 3 words, I would say " energetic, spontaneous, and combative." Spontaneous in her dance, which happens.... well anywhere she can get away with. Energetic with all of her passions; cooking, researching, and exercising. Her combative nature is apparent in conversation when debates escalate, situations go awry, and sleep deprivation sets in.

Love is in the Air!

In accordance with Valentine's Day, I want to write a post about love and one of our fabulous independent contractors, Miranda Hayman.

Miranda has worked with D&E Casino Services for the last two years, in which her hard-working spirit and positive demeanor has landed her a regular spot on the weekend line-up and special place in the heart's of all D&E Casino Service's Staff.

I could spend a whole entry detailing Miranda's awesomeness, however this week I would like to share news of Miranda's recent engagement!!!!!!!!!

Miranda and her fiance, Darryl Gunther, have been dating for the last 3 years, and as of yesterday are now engaged. The two met during their graduate studies in chemistry at USC. They have worked with each other in a small/cold chemistry lab and lived with each other for much of the time that have been together. Their relationship is testament to the idea that if you really love someone you can be with them constantly.

We are so excited for Miranda and Darryl. So excited that Ellie, co-CEO, jumped out of her chair when I informed her about this momentous news. Way to go Miranda and Darryl, we can't wait till the wedding :)

Super Bowl Party Menu Extravaganza

This Sunday February 7th 2010 is the biggest day in football, the Super Bowl!

To help everyone out with game day prep, I have assembled an quick and easy watch-party menu that is still fun and flavorful.

Feta-Peppercorn Spread

Serves 10-12

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) feta cheese, crumbled
1 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Preparation

1. Place ingredients in a food processor or blender; pulse until smooth.

Serve with Pita Chips, such as Stacy's Pita Chips

Onion Rings

Serves 6

Ingredients

2 medium yellow onions
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups fine dry breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon seasoning blend, such as Cajun, jerk or Old Bay
Olive oil or canola oil cooking spray

Preparation

Position racks in upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 450°F. Coat 2 large rimmed baking sheets with cooking spray.
Cut off both ends of each onion and peel. Slice into 1/2-inch-thick slices; separate into rings. (Discard the smallest rings or reserve for another use.) Place the rings in a medium bowl; cover with cold water.
Combine flour and baking powder in a shallow dish. Lightly beat eggs in another shallow dish. Combine breadcrumbs and seasoning in a third shallow dish. Working with one ring at time, remove from the water, letting any excess drip off. Coat in flour, shaking off any excess. Dip in egg and let any excess drip off. Then coat in the breadcrumb mixture, shaking off any excess. Place on the prepared baking sheets. Generously coat the onion rings with cooking spray.
Bake for 10 minutes. Turn each onion ring over and return to the oven, switching the positions of the baking sheets. Continue baking until brown and very crispy, 8 to 10 minutes more.

Lemon-drop Chicken Wings

Serves 8

Ingredients

1/2 cup vodka
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 1/2 pounds chicken wings, tips trimmed off
Preparation
1. In a large bowl or resealable plastic bag, combine vodka, lemon juice, sugar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Stir to dissolve sugar and salt. Add the chicken wings and mix to coat. Cover bowl or seal bag and refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours.
2. Preheat oven to 400°. Line a 9- by 13-in. baking pan with two layers of foil. Arrange the chicken wings in a single layer in the pan, and pour the marinade evenly over all. Bake until meat is well browned and pulling away from the bone, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Serve hot or warm.

Roasted Pepper Pesto-Tomato Pizza
Serves 6
Ingredients
1 large garlic clove, peeled
1 cup basil leaves
1/4 cup (1 ounce) grated fresh Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 1/2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 (5.2-ounce) bottle roasted red bell peppers, drained
1 (1-pound) Italian cheese-flavored pizza crust (such as Boboli)
3/4 cup (3 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
3 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced (about 6 ounces)
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Preparation
Preheat oven to 450°.
Drop garlic through food chute with food processor on; process until minced. Add basil and next 6 ingredients (basil through bell peppers), and process until smooth, scraping sides of bowl once.
Place pizza crust on a baking sheet. Spread pepper mixture over pizza crust, leaving a 1/2-inch border; sprinkle with mozzarella. Arrange the tomato slices in a single layer on top of the cheese. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes. Sprinkle pizza with oregano.

Bourbon Fudge Brownies
Serves 20
Ingredients
1/4 cup bourbon
1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cups sugar
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
Cooking spray
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°.
Bring bourbon to a boil in a small saucepan; remove from heat. Add chocolate chips, stirring until smooth.
Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups, and level with a knife. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt, stirring with a whisk.
Combine sugar and butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until well combined. Add vanilla and eggs; beat well. Add flour mixture and bourbon mixture to sugar mixture, beating at low speed just until combined.
Spread batter into a 9-inch square baking pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack.

Beer 'Garitas
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 cup frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
1 cup tequila
1/2 cup orange liqueur
Crushed ice
1/2 to 1 cup cold beer
Preparation
1. Stir together first 3 ingredients until well blended. Fill 4 medium glasses with crushed ice. Pour limeade mixture evenly into glasses. Add beer to taste.

Haiti Disaster: Fundraise and Help!

As everyone is aware, Haiti experienced a traumatic earthquake that killed an estimated 50 to 200,000 and left countless others injured, homeless, or orphaned. The Red Cross is providing much needed support in Haiti. At this time they need monetary donations to continue their relief efforts.

Up in the Air and D&E Casino Parallels

The 2009 movie Up In the Air, starring George Clooney, was brought to my attention earlier today. The film possesses some interesting parallels to our company D&E Casino Services.

First of which the main character shares the surname Bingham. Ryan Bingham is the films protagonist, who travels around America firing employees for various companies. Unlike the Binghams I know( Ellie, Dan, Jennifer, and myself), Ryan Bingham does not value relationships and connections in life. Which is a major point of contrast within out company. Whereas Ryan tries to minimize personal connections, our company does our best to maximize personalization and increase relationships amongst independent contractors and with clients. We believe that a healthy company is full-bodied; possessing a brain, body, and HEART!

Our company, like Ryan, is accustomed to non-stop travel. in the last 11 days we have visited many Sheratons and other venues in the cities of:

Cerritos, Tarzana, Universal City, Fontana, Huntington Beach, Culver City, Irvine, Temecula, and more...

Company Jr. Partner, Jennifer Bingham, is currently in Belize vacationing with key independent contractor and her boyfriend Ken Miranda. We are excited that she has the chance to refresh and bring home some Belizian sugar.

My point in writing this piece is to reemphasize the message imparted by Up In the Air. There is more to life than work, work, work. If you spend your whole life running away from relationships and commitments, then what do you have except a bare wall and empty refrigerator. Enjoy life and be merry!

Celebrate National Trivia Day: Casino Fun Facts

January 4th, 2010 is National Trivia Day. I sought out some interesting trivia facts related to casino gaming tables and Las Vegas. Fun Stuff!

Worldwide there are about 4800 casinos, with about 1790 in North America, 1670 in the United States and 26 in Michigan.
The word "Casino" originally meant a small villa, summerhouse or pavilion built for pleasure, usually on the grounds of a larger Italian villa or palazzo. During the 19th century, the word "Casino" came to include other public buildings where pleasurable activities, including gambling and sports, took place.
"Playing with House Money" refers to the situation where a winning player is placing bets with money that has been won from the casino.
When it opened in 1989, The Mirage, in Las Vegas, was the first casino to use security cameras full time on all table games to catch cheaters.
Dice have been made from wood, clay, stone, peach pits, animal horns, teeth, ivory, bronze, porcelain, even jewels. The oldest known dice with regular sides were found in northern Iraq. They're made of baked clay and date to about 3,000 B.C.
The kings in decks of playing cards represent real leaders and conquerors from history, although not all had the title of king. The deck we use today is based on cards designed in 15th-century France. The king of spades represents the Biblical King David, the king of clubs represents Alexander the Great, the king of hearts represents Charlemagne and the king of diamonds represents Julius Caesar.
Horizontal gaming wheels, such as those used in roulette, were invented in England in 1720 for a game called roly-poly. Roly-poly was similar to roulette, except there were no numbers on the wheel. There were alternating white spaces and black spaces, along with a "bar black" space and a "bar white" space. The "bar" spaces were the equivalents of zero and double-zero -- if the ball landed in either space, bets on black or white lost.
In the Chinese culture, the number four is considered bad luck. High-rolling whales from China are very important to the gambling industry in Vegas. With this in mind, Wynn Las Vegas and Rio have no tower floors that start with four. The elevators count 38, 39, 50, 51 etc.
Former President Richard Nixon won $6,000 playing poker n his first two months in the U.S. Navy during WWll. That is roughly equal to $42,640 in 2004 dollars. He used that money as well as more poker winnings to finance his run for the U.S. Congress in 1946, which he won.

I really enjoy the fact that casino gaming has had a place in society since ancient times and remains such a strong presence.

Over the course of 2009, the USA and the remainder of the world experienced a plethora of interesting events. The most notable year trend, which affected most everyone, was the economic recession that swept over businesses( small to huge) and individuals( poor to wealthy). The recession has significantly impacted the the lifestyle choices of all Americans. Not only has American consumerism culture suffered, but our ability to fulfill basic needs was complicated. Before you stop reading and think to yourself " well duh of course the economy sucks," I want to comment on some novel significance of the past year's events.....

In my opinion, the economic turmoil of the last year, provided the impetus, which invigorated American creativity. All forms of business-people found themselves in need of innovative strategies of securing and maintaining business. Social Media experienced a huge influx of business-users, who realized that the benefit of imparting potential customers with detailed glimpse of their products and company. The general public discovered the utility of social-networking sites in job-searches and service/product selection. The very same social media sites( Facebook, blogger, twitter, ect) provided Americans with an economical means of communication and socialization. The month's end has tiptoed up upon us and delivered a sneak attack....

The crazy busyness of December preoccupied all of us at D&E Casino and now Christmas is 4 days away!!!!!!!!!! I have failed to complete any holiday shopping and am suddenly realizing that it is almost 2010. With more events scheduled for this week, it appears that scheduling in holiday time is somewhat analogous to a rubix cube.

I want to spend a couple sentences thanking our fabulous independent contractors, employees, and clients that have made the last month happen. Its been a wonderful coordination of efforts that has resulted in a rewarding experience for all of us. An experience that is significant this month and for many to follow.

In modern America Christmas is oftentimes reduced to a commercial charade that imposes demands of perfection and extravagant gift giving. As Christmas is traditionally a holiday of altruistic giving, we were so excited to see holiday giving in full-effect. Employers treating their employees. Families expressing their love through orchestrated events and well-thought out presents. Independent contractors surprising management with tokens of their affection. In a very fun display the CEO of Westfield Malls ( Peter Lowy ) took over the blackjack game and

entertained his employees for several minutes.

Halfway into the month and D&E Casino Services is in a full blown tornado of activity. we are experiencing a rapid influx of event bookings from Hanukkah celebrations, employee appreciations parties, Birthdays, Fundraisers, and a software trade-show. We are popppppinnnn! All the events have us trapsing about California--- Granada Hills one day Dana Point the following day and Ontario the next. There have been unexpected twists; such as four flights of stairs that a client failed to mention and transferred the equipment from event venues in a rainstorm. Our dedicated personnel have worked double events in one day and even pulled 24 hour days. We are so thankful for the business and find some sick enjoyment in the crazy hours and nonstop travel.

Like everyone we have holiday shopping and decorations to do, so I wanted to impart a tale that might inspire us all with a bit of yuletiede joy....

'Twas the night before Christmas.

I hit the casino.

I went there to play,

More than just Keno.

The dealers were assigned to their tables with care.

Chatting with patrons who were gambling there.

I walked to the Slots and started to Play.

I had a feeling this would be my Day

I put in my coins and gave the handle a yank.

As the coins started dropping I heard them go "Clank."

The wheels started spinning, they whirled and they glowed.

Alas! I saw three 7's, lined up in a row.

The lights started flashing, the bells all were ringing,

Out came the Jackpot with that old familiar jingling.

I reached down and scooped up all of my winnings.

I headed for the tables.. I couldn't stop grinning.

A table was open so I sat for Blackjack,

Put down money for chips and purchased a stack.

The Dealer was smiling, I was having such fun.

Drew a Jack then an Ace, I had Twenty One!

Now off to Roulette but which numbers to choose?

The way things were going I just couldn't lose.

I watched the ball spinning, it clicked and it Popped.

Right into my number, that little ball dropped.

"Thirty five to One", the dealer pushed me my chips.

Then she said, "Thanks!" for the toke that I flipped.

Then out on the floor, I heard such a clatter.

I rushed to the Craps Table, to see what was the matter.

There was this Fat Guy so lively and quick,

I thought to myself, he looks like Saint Nick.

I watched the dice as they flew from his hand.

He made his point, ever time they'd land.

"Place the six and the eight and a dollar on YO!

"He blew on the dice before letting them go.

"To some these dice are more fun than toys.

I almost forgot, hard six for the girls and the boys!"

He handled the bones so smooth and so swift.

The timing was right, to ask for a gift.

"Oh Santa please share some of your lucky charm."

He whispered to me, as he took my arm. "If you want to keep winning when rolling the dice,

Just listen to Santa and heed my advice.

Santa's workshop is in full-swing

With tomorrow comes the official start of D&E Casino's busiest month. Our workshop of event representatives are busy planning and accommodating the requests of our clients. The staff is booked and google maps is keyed, so let it snow let it let snow! JK its way too cold for that snow nonsense. We are ready to get into the holiday flow of multiple events everyday all throughout Southern California. We cannot wait to encounter the wild situations which will undoubtedly ensue. As I like to tell my family, we would be the subject of an awesome reality TV show called " Fun times at the Bingham." Thankfully our fantastic independent contractors and employees make the entire production possible. On independent contractor deserves special attention.... With baby Chris now being over one years old, my cousin Cindy Ramirez has returned to our team of independent contractors. Everyone is very excited to have Cindy back( myself especially). Cindy began working for the company as a teenager, continued working for several years, and then went on hiatus with the birth of her children. Welcome back Cindy!

Spotlight of Jacob Krucynski

What is a team without its component members? Without individuals a team is merely a name. At D&E Casino services each team member holds a personal significance to our owners and management. Each dealer’s personality and demeanor contributes to the overall ambience of an event. We are so thankful for the work of our independent contractors and employees. This week I am going to spotlight long-time independent contractor and friend of the company, Jacob Kruczynski.
Jacob started work with the company while attending Cal State Long Beach as a Business Major and member of the Cross Country Team. Jacob’s intelligence and exceptional work-ethic accelerated his progression within the company. He soon joined the delivery crew, craps dealer roster, and office team. When asked Ellie(co-CEO) what aided Jacob in his rapid promotion she replied “ Jacob is a quick-study and enjoys putting together the puzzle.” As the event industry is oftentimes a logistical riddle, his solution-orientated mind-frame is a great asset to the company. Jennifer (Jr. Partner) added that “Jacob possesses the flexibility necessary to succeed in this business.” Given the long hours close quarter nature of our company, Jacob also became a friend and loved-one amongst our family.
As a company we are very excited to share some recent changes in Jacob’s life, including his home-owner status and engagement to the lovely Jess. He exemplifies the American dream; that independence, success, and family are achieved with hard-work integrity.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving like many American holidays has been streamlined into a day spent eating large amounts of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. As most Americans learn in elementary school, Thanksgiving was first celebrated to thank God for enabling Plymoth Rock pilgrims to endure a harsh Winter throught the help of Native Americans. In fact, most of the "traditional" Thanksgiving feast items were not present for the first Thanksgiving meal of 1621. Ironically the first Thanksgiving were spent fasting rather than overindulging in Autumn food staples.

Unlike Christmas and Easter, typically Thanksgiving involves no gift-giving or extravagant galas. In comparision, most individuals invest significantly less energy into Thanksgiving. I would like to encourage everyone to spend some time thinking about the most important areas of their lives. Take the intiative and find a means to express your life priorities. Feel free to tell us what you are most thankful for on the comment wall.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, D&E Casino Services prioritizes family. As a family-based company, promoting familial interests is not only innate but essential. Staff within the office and shop are all family members and family-friends. Familial staffing ensures the maintenance of company integrity and cohesion. Everyday within the office is enertaining but productive. The efficiency of deliveries and event operations, that is a product of nonverbal communication and familial understanding, is truly amazing. With that said, this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my family and a working environment that enables me to enjoy their company in and out of the office.

Veterans Day 2009

This week on November 11th, we celebrate veterans of U.S.

Military. The trials that veterans and active military personnel

have endured are quite dissimilar from the typical american's

hardships and are deserve the utmost celebration and

commendation. While most Americans have infinite venues of

relaxation and recreation, war combatants have access to much fewer forms of release. In

comparison to the soldiers that fought in World War I, U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have

more diverse methods of accessing the comforts of home. Internet connection, satellite

cellphones, and efficient mail services enable military personnel with a means to contact loved

ones, enjoy recreational media, and receive care-packages. Regardless of the additional comforts,

fighting a war is no easy task. With that said, we here at D&E Casino are saluting those that

fought and are currently fighting for the United States of America. Thank you for all that you do!

Bing cherries, otter pops, and more summer fun

As Southern California has experienced a minor heat wave within the last several weeks, we here at D&E Casino have not halted our movement in the hopes of cooling down. However we, like everyone else, have been doing our best to stay cool and enjoy the summer sun:)

Within the last several weeks, the company has serviced local events in Long Beach, Carson, San Pedro.... I personally had the opportunity to travel the long and hot trek to Palm Springs. Event preparation is accomplished by the valiant efforts of Jennifer and Ellie, who fight the heat by a variety of means. Ellie takes somewhat frequent dips in the pool or snacks on her favorite Bing cherries before tackling more phone calls and accounting. In comparison, Jennifer keeps a supply of otter pops at her arsenal. On event locations, we have been observing an increase of pool parties, maximum air conditioning, and icy-cold margaritas. My point is that parties are important to D&E Casino and Southern California, despite the temperature. So pull out your mister fan, relax, and enjoy the party!

Michael Jackson and America's entertainment culture

Well as everyone knows Michael Jackson passed away recently and the world has entered a mourning period for one of the world's premier pop icons. I don't plan to spend this blog detailing the information that everyone has repeatedly heard on the news. However, I will examine how the world's response to Michael Jackson's death exemplifies the importance of entertainment in American culture.

Michael Jackson, like many other celebrities, is more well known among the public than most politians or national dignitaries. Unlike such officials, Jackson was a musical artist and performer that failed to pass any laws or formulate economic relief plans. Despite his legal troubles and public scandals, Jackson maintains his adored teenage idol status. Currently the nightly news details Jackson updates in long detail before other national and international headlines, which suggests that Jackson is more important to most of America.

If Jackson is indeed more important to the public, what gives him this elevated status? What above all else did/does Jackson provide for people? Entertainment. His ability to capture an audience and interest world-wide rests on his ability to entertain others onstage and offstage. Although Michael Jackson is a special case, celebrity precedence is a standard theme throughout our population and media. It seems that the public places a greater importance on entertainment and recreation. Relaxation and amusement are at the forefront of most Americans' expenditures and priorities.

So at this point you may be wondering what in the heck does this analyzation have to do with D&E Casino? Everything! Entertainment and recreation is the name of our game here. It's the essence of our being, the motivation, and driving force of our operations. We don't trudge through 405 traffic, trek to North Los Angeles, and battle storms/earthquakes for the sake of finding uncomfortable situations. Our company provides entertainemnt services, because we recognize the importance and neccesity for diversion among Southern Californian citizens. So embrace your needs and priorites and watch Harry Potter, listen to thriller, or throw a casino party. Most of all have some fun!!!!!!!

A celebration of fathers

Happy early Fathers Day!

This Sunday is dedicated to those special men in our lives that contributed half of our DNA. Accordingly, I would like to spend this week’s post celebrating Dan Bing ham, the man responsible for one half of D&E Casino’s genetic makeup.

As I have mentioned before D&E Casino is a family company, owned and operated by Dan and Ellie Bing ham. While Ellie and Jennifer run the office, Dan is what I call the “loadmaster.” He organizes the shop and ensures that every piece of casino equipment is artfully squeezed into every crevice of the truck, and delivered to event location. In addition to preparing trucks for delivery, Dan has handcrafted every piece of gaming equipment. When I was a child I remember sitting on a crap table to weigh it down, as my father made adjustments to its construction. His work requires substantial skill and hard-work, which is indispensable to the company.

Besides skillful loading, Dan is a meticulous delivery coordinator. He will accept nothing less than a perfectly symmetrical set-up. Years of experience enable him to evaluate the event space and position games in a manner that allow for optimal presentation and guest enjoyment.

Yay for fathers! This weekend, enliven the traditional bbq, and celebrate yours with a casino party.

First off, I would like to apologize for the lack of posting for the last two weeks. Unfortunately my heart has been tied up as my grandmother lived her last two weeks. My grandmother, Margaret Johnston, was diagnosed with breast cancer which eventually metastasized and caused her death. Cancer is a terrible plague that wreaks havoc on the American and world population. As a company and a family, we encourage everyone to educated themselves about the symptoms and risk factors related to cancer. Although people can be genetically predisposed to cancer, the onset of cancer is most typically linked to environmental and behavioral patterns. So my message this week: take responsibility for your actions.

Hello Hello!

This week’s blog post is going to be dedicated to D&E Casino’s very own Jennifer Bingham. Besides being my sister, Jennifer is one of the company’s foremost chargers. She ensures that events are staffed, marketing campaigns are circulated, and most importantly that lunch is delicious and prompt. Jen is awesome at everything she does and she is especially talented at pulling off last-minute events; calling dealers, coordinating with clients, and even loading trucks. She does whatever she needs to do to make an event happen. Part of D&E’s quality assurance is a reflection of Jen’s constant motivation and push for excellent results. Jen never really leaves the job, even during our celebrated lunch hour; her blackberry is out as she responds to emails and maintains D&E’s trademark rapid response time. So, next time you request a quote and it fires back within five minutes, thank Jen, because without her it would not be possible.

Its heating up in SoCal, which means global warming is getting worse and we are doomed to a human barbeque???? Ok scratch that, more likely summer barbecue season is quickly approaching. So what are the fundamentals of a good barbecue?

1) Food

2) Drinks

3) Pool

4) Entertainment

I'm afraid its true, people get bored without some form of extra entertainment. That is why D&E Casino Services always experiences a significant increase in business around this time. The next question, what if my guests don't usually play casino games? The answer: teaching the games is half of our dealers jobs. Even daunting games like craps and let-it ride are easily mastered with the help of our friendly and fun dealers. Looking to get a head-start before the party? Done! Here is a list of commonly used casino jargon:

Bones: Another term for dice
Color up: Trading in smaller denomination chips for larger value chips, usually when ending a session at a table
Deuce: In dice, a pair of ones, also known as "snake eyes."
First base: In poker, first base is the player on the far left of the dealer. This player is the first to receive cards as they're dealt
Hard Hand - In blackjack, any hand that does not contain an Ace valued at 11
Hit: Taking another card in blackjack, as in "Hit me."
Let it ride: Letting the winnings on a bet roll over to the next bet. See also "pressing a bet."
Natural - In blackjack, a natural is a two-card hand of twenty-one points. In baccarat a natural is a two-card total of eight, or nine.
Paint: A face card
Pocket Cards - In poker where some of the player's cards are dealt to them face down. These cards are called pocket cards
Push - A tie hand between a dealer and a player. A round of play where neither the player nor the casino wins
River - In poker, the final card dealt in a hand of stud or hold‘em. In seven-card stud, staying in until the fifth and final round of betting is called going to the river
Third base: In blackjack, the player sitting just to the dealer's right. This player is considered important on the table because they are the last to play before the dealer plays their hand.
Whale - A player who makes extremely large wagers. Unlike high rollers who consistently wager $100 or more per round, whales are typically those who make wagers amounting to thousands if not tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per round.

After this weekend's events in Santa Monica and Newport Beach, I have exciting news about new gaming ventures!!!!!!!!!!!

In any business, flexibility is a key to succesfully evolve with the market. So everyone that works for D&E Casino is required to attend weekly yoga class where our resident instructor, Flower, pushes us all to bend and twist... Whoops, compulsory yoga class might be one of my personal fantasies....... So perhaps our blackjack and craps dealers are not well practiced at feathered peacock or one-legged king pigeon pose, however we are all quite situationally limber. For instance, this past weekend a client wanted arcade and casino games. Jennifer, one of the women behind our company's magic, stretched her imagination and orgazational skills to obtain the most popular video games. Then seven of our dealers bended outside of their familarity-zone and were trained to assist guests in their video-game entertainment. After their positive reception this saturday, arcade games and attendants are now part D&E Casino's standard services

Although adaption and flexibility are integral to company evolution, maintaining fundamental business philosphy is just as important. The familial-focus of D&E Casino, is one such philosphy that will never change. Since the company's begining. Ellie and Dan made sure their daughters contruibuted to the operation. I can remember sitting in the shop as Dan, my father, made crap-table repairs. To this day, we love to work an event as a family and provide the awesome entertainment.

I super excited to announce the company's 18th year anniversary. Given the current economy and typical success-rate for small companies, it is quite momentous to celebrate the company's stability and arrival into 2009. Coincidentally the D&E Casino's founders and co-CEOs commemorated their 25th wedding anniversary. A 25 year marriage is noteworthy in today's society by itself, but add in a full-time business venture for 18 of those years and you move into Guinness world record territory. So congrats to Dan, Ellie, Jennifer, and all the independent contractors that make it happen!

This last weekend, our company had fun time providing entertainment for three local fundraisers; 2 were located in Long Beach, Lakewood and Santa Fe Springs. Monte Carlo fundraisers and poker tournaments provide an awesome way for non-profit groups to encourage guests to donate resources, while providing donors an exciting evening in return. Typically guests buy a general admission ticket that includes an initial amount of casino play-money. Donors use the play-money at their favorite games and buy additional vouchers as the event progresses. Our fundraiser clients can raise a substantial amount of funds by creating the Las Vegas atmosphere encouraging guests to purchase additional casino-play vouchers.

The company's birth story

Today I want to share the story of D&E Casino’s birth. When that fateful day came, Ellie began having contractions early in the morning and immediately rushed to the hospital where she……..
Ok so maybe the company’s beginning didn’t occur in the neonatal unit, but it can be traced back to a Nordstrom’s fragrance fair in 1991. Ellie Bing ham, our wonderful Co-CEO and my mother,was at Nordstroms, sampling various fragrances and noticed a hysterical woman amidst a pile of wood and green felt. Being a caring person, Ellie approached the woman and inquired into the problem. The crying woman informed Ellie that a casino rental company had left the equipment unassembled and failed to provide the promised dealers. Ellie and her husband Dan frequently hosted card parties, so Ellie offered to deal during the evening’s event. Later at home, Ellie spoke with Dan and presented him with an idea. The idea was a big one, the husband-wife team would build, rent, and deal their own casino games. They started small, one blackjack table, and gradually expanded the operation to its present size, 100 tables and 140 dealers! Despite substantial business evolution, D&E Casino maintains its fundamentally familial-vibe and honest commitment to entertainment.
